What is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

What is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate?

Sodium lauryl Sulfate (SLS) is an active ingredient in many toothpastes and can promote microscopic damage to the oral tissues in some patients.  Some patients that have a sulfite allergy or are sensitive to certain sulfa products, such as SLS will find it is beneficial to try SLS-free toothpastes.

Here at Distinctive Dentistry, our team of hygienists and doctors have created a list of SLS free products to use so that our patients can avoid sensitivities and allergies.  We want our patients to have options available to them so they can maintain a happy and healthy mouth.

Symptoms that are associated with SLS sensitivities are constant mouth sores or canker sores.

Here is a list of the options to try:

Biotene Dry Mouth Toothpaste

Orajel® Dry Mouth Moisturizing Toothpaste

Oral-B Rembrandt Whitening Toothpaste for Canker Sore Sufferers

TheraBreath Toothpaste

Sensodyne (check for SLS free types, including tartar control and anti-cavity cool gel)

Tom’s of Maine

If you think you are having a SLS sensitivity or allergy, contact the team at Distinctive-Dentistry with any questions!
